2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

Ingestion causes severe swelling, H2S formation in the stomach, severe damage to the delicate tissue and danger of perforation. Ingestion of larger amounts may cause defects to the central nervous system, dizziness, headache and unconsciousness.

Eye

Causes corrosion of the eye tissue, permanent eye damage, lacrimation, redness of the eye tissue, visual disturbances.

Skin

Causes severe irritation to the skin - corrosive.

Inhaled

Dusts are highly corrosive and cause irritation to the respiratory tract. Hydrogen sulphide gas (H2S) is a strong irritant and may become overpowering. May cause irritation of the nasal mucous membranes, runny nose, headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, disturbances of consciousness and respiratory difficulties.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

May cause impaired memory, paralysis, impairment of the nervous system.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

Clean mouth with water and drink 1-3 glasses of water. Induce vomiting, but only if victim is fully conscious. Seek medical attention immediately.

Eye

Rinse eyes immediately with running water for at least 15 minutes, retracting eyelids often. Do not apply neutralising agents. Consult a doctor/medical service.

Skin

Take off contaminated clothing and shoes immediately. Wash off immediately with plenty of water. Cover wound with sterile dressing. Do not remove clothing if sticks to the skin. Consult a doctor/medical service.

Inhaled

Remove victim to fresh air - avoid becoming casualty. If NOT breathing apply artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, experienced person may administer oxygen. Transport to a doctor or hospital immediately.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

Treat symptomatically based on judgement of doctor and individual reactions of patient. Provide fresh air, rest and warmth.

2.6 Toxicity Data

Oral LD50 = 200 mg/kg (rat) Intraperitoneal LD50 = 14.6 mg/kg (rat) Intraperitoneal LD50 = 18 mg/kg (mouse) Carcinogenicity = not listed (IARC)

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

3.1 Exposure Standards

No exposure limit has been established for this particular product, however, the decomposition product Hydrogen Sulphide has the following limits : Sodium sulphide : TWA 10 ppm (14 mg/m3) STEL 15 ppm (21 mg/m3)

3.2 Engineering Controls

Ensure adequate ventilation to maintain exposure below limits, especially in confined areas. Use adequate exhaust ventilation and dust collection.

3.3 Personal Protection

Eye protection - wear a face shield; in case of dust production wear protective goggles. Skin protection - wear gloves and protective clothing (material for protective clothing : rubber). In case of dust production wear head/neck protection. Respiratory protection - wear a gas mask with filter type B on heating. Wear a dust mask with filter type P3 if dust production occurs.

3.4 Flammability

Keep away from heat and ignition sources (NO SMOKING).

SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION

4.1 Storage / Transport

Keep container tightly closed. Store in a dry, well ventilated area. Keep away from heat sources, ignition sources, combustible materials, oxidising agents and acids. Avoid raising dust. Do not discharge the waste into the drain. Remove contaminated clothing immediately. Clean contaminated clothing. Avoid contact with aluminium, copper and zinc. Product is hygroscopic.

4.2 Packaging / Labelling

UN No. 2949

Class 8

Sub Risk None Allocated

Hazchem Code 2X

Pack Group II

EPG No. 23

Shipping Name SODIUM HYDROSULPHIDE, > 25% WATER OF CRYSTALLIZATION

Hazard CORROSIVE

Risk Phrases

R31 Contact with acids liberates toxic gas.

R34 Causes burns.

Safety Phrases

S1/2 Keep locked up and out of the reach of children.

S26 In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Clean-up personnel should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. Ensure adequate ventilation of the spill site. Avoid dust formation. Prevent soil and water pollution. Substance must not be discharged into the sewer. Knock down/dilute dust cloud with water spray. Plug the leak, cut off the supply. Dam up the solid spill.

Stop dust cloud by covering with sand/earth. Solid spill - neutralise with sodium bicarbonate. Scoop solid spill into closing containers. For powdered; do not use compressed air for pumping over spills. Carefully collect the spill or leftovers. Clean contaminated surface with an excess of water. Take collected spill to manufacturer/competent authority.

Disposal

Landfill or incinerate at an approved site in accordance with national and local regulations. Neutralise with 5% hydrogen peroxide. Remove to an authorised dump (Class I).

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Reacts slowly with water/(moist) air releasing toxic/combustible gases/vapours such as hydrogen sulphide and releasing corrosive products such as sodium hydroxide. On heating, product may emit toxic/combustible gases/vapours of hydrogen sulphide and sulphur oxides. On burning, product will release toxic and corrosive gases/vapours (sulphur oxides). Reacts with some acids releasing toxic/combustible gases/vapours of hydrogen sulphide. Reacts with strong oxidisers releasing toxic and corrosive gases/vapours of sulphur dioxide. Avoid heat sources, ignition sources, combustible materials, oxidising agents, acids , aluminium, copper and zinc.

Extinguishing Media

Fire-fighters should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. Use water spray, polyvalent foam, ABC powder or carbon dioxide to extinguish. Cool tanks/drums with water spray or remove them into safety. Dilute toxic gases with water spray. Take account of toxic fire fighting water.
